What Is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is an estimate of the amount of energy your body requires to maintain basic physiological functions while at rest.

BMR does not include calories burned through exercise, daily movement, digestion, or other physical activities.

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Male:
BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + 5

Female:
BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161

Why Is BMR Useful?

BMR can be used as a starting point when estimating daily energy requirements. When combined with an activity multiplier, it can help estimate total daily energy expenditure.
